Get Fit Club Begins at KES
KES is putting it Extended Contract Program to good use.  Coordinated by Rosie Sexton (Physical Education Teacher) and Patricia Rowan (3rd Grade Teacher), the program is emphasizing "healthy lifestyle choices" including exercise fundamentals and programs as well as nutrition and diet education.
KES:  Staff Wellness Challenge!

Principal Sheila Sitzlar's staff has accepted the "wellness" challenge.  Many of the staff has challenged themselves and each other to become physically fit and develop healthy lifestyles.  They have organized a "Biggest Loser" competition among themselves to lose weight and get fit.  Some participate in Weight Watcher's, some in Curves, and some do their own program.
In addition, the staff has organized 5 teams to participate in the "Tennessee Shapes Up" Program through the UT Extension office and Coordinated School Health Program.  This program is an 8 week cycle where teams will accumulate points for fruits, veggies, water, and exercise on a weekly basis.  Not only are they competing among themselves, but also any team throughout the district.
GAME ON!
Kindergarten Students Excel In Their Walking Program

Under the direction of teacher Beth Oran, her Kindergarten students have been walking each day as part of the 90 minute Physical Activity Program.  The class walks about 15 minutes per day and have kept track of their accomplishments.  Here is what they found!
  AS OF APRIL 15th

What an accomplishment and an excellent program led by Mrs. Oran.

GREAT JOB, Yellow Jackets!
Kingston Elementary Students Have Fun at Field Day events (May 5th to 7th)

The Yellow Jackets had a "field day" at the annual Field Day Events organized by Physical Education teachers Annie Scarborough and Rosie Sexton.  The students participated in various activities including an obstacle course, ball toss, tug-of-war, frisbee toss among several other games.  Each grade level had their own moment in the sun getting lots of physical exercise and having lots of enjoyment as well.
Tennessee Lions Club Offers Free Vision Screening for Roane County Schools

The Tellico Village Lions Club offered free vision photoscreening for all kindergarten students during the week of May 12-16th.  Jerry Knepp and his team visited each elementary school and did the screening for all who returned their signed permission forms.
Photoscreening is a non-invasive test that can detect most problems which cause poor vision in young  children.  This photographic method of screening is able to pre-diagnose or diagnose seven problematic eye issues such as lazy eye, cross-eyes, astigmatism, cataracts and more. The screening procedures are simple and involve two pictures taken of each child's eyes.  One picture is with the flash in the vertical position and one is in the horizontal position.  The MTI PhotosScreener captures the eye's light reflection as the photograph is taken.  These pictures are then sent to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to be analyzed.  Parents are notified of the results in the event a referral to their eye doctor is suggested.
The Tennessee  Lions work to brighten the future of Tennessee's children through this vision detection program.        Each year the Lions Clubs screen over 25,000 children with necessary follow-up to be sure vision care is received.  All at Roane County Schools wish to thank the Lions Club of Tellico Village for bringing this Outreach Program to our schools and allowing us to offer this opportunity to our families.  We look forward to continuing and expanding the program for the 2008-9 school year.
