Healthy School Program
1.  Each week, the news team from Midtown Elementary School makes an exercise video for students to use during the week.
               .
2.  Did you know that walking can stimulate weight loss?  Just ask the staff at MTES.  They have began a weight watcher's group and in  just 3 week, the group lost a combined total of over 100 lbs.

3.  In addition, the students are "Walking Across Tennessee" in a program sponsored by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee.  Their goal is to be an "Extra Mile" school by accumulating 450 miles this year.

4.  No more unhealthy snacks at MTES.  All the unhealthy choices are a thing of the past.

GETFITTN
                     Team visits Midtown Elementary School

Harriman, TN - Governor Bredesen's GetFitTN Team came to Roane County on Thursday, January 10, 2008.  GetFitTN is a statewide awareness program developed by the Governor to address the rising epidemic of Type 2 diabetes and risk factors that lead to diabetes, like obesity.  This initiative is aimed at educating both adults and children that Type 2 diabetes can be delayed or even prevented with modest lifestyle changes like increasing physical activity and a healthier diet.

Midtown Elementary School Principal Robin Smith, her staff and students greeted the team as they arrived.  Tara Tocco and Heather Newman of the GetFitTN team were treated to a healthy lunch in the school cafeteria followed with a presentation by the MTES student news and fitness teams.  The news and fitness teams, under the direction of Brooks Benjamin, media film specialist, Kevin Johnson, physical education teacher, performed one of their exercise routines which are recorded and used in the classrooms each week as students do their daily physical activity.  They were joined by the GetFitTN team and supported by their classmates.

Following that presentation, Heather and Tara led the entire 2nd and 3rd grade students and their teachers in the Cha Cha Slide.  Dr. Toni McGriff, Director of Schools, Mr. Gary Aytes, Elementary Education Supervisor, and Principal Robin Smith even joined in the fun.

Before leaving, the GetFitTN team spoke to several students about eating healthy and staying active.  They presented MTES with 100 jump ropes as a thank you gift and a motivational tool to continue to create fun fitness activities for all to enjoy.

Tennessee Lions Club Offers Free Vision Screening for Roane County Schools

The Tellico Village Lions Club offered free vision photoscreening for all kindergarten students during the week of May 12-16th.  Jerry Knepp and his team visited each elementary school and did the screening for all who returned their signed permission forms.
Photoscreening is a non-invasive test that can detect most problems which cause poor vision in young  children.  This photographic method of screening is able to pre-diagnose or diagnose seven problematic eye issues such as lazy eye, cross-eyes, astigmatism, cataracts and more. The screening procedures are simple and involve two pictures taken of each child's eyes.  One picture is with the flash in the vertical position and one is in the horizontal position.  The MTI PhotosScreener captures the eye's light reflection as the photograph is taken.  These pictures are then sent to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to be analyzed.  Parents are notified of the results in the event a referral to their eye doctor is suggested.
The Tennessee  Lions work to brighten the future of Tennessee's children through this vision detection program.        Each year the Lions Clubs screen over 25,000 children with necessary follow-up to be sure vision care is received.  All at Roane County Schools wish to thank the Lions Club of Tellico Village for bringing this Outreach Program to our schools and allowing us to offer this opportunity to our families.  We look forward to continuing and expanding the program for the 2008-9 school year.
