Tennessee Lions Club Offers Free Vision Screening for Roane County Schools
The Tellico Village Lions Club offered free vision photoscreening for all kindergarten students during the week of May 12-16th. Jerry Knepp and his team visited each elementary school and did the screening for all who returned their signed permission forms.
Photoscreening is a non-invasive test that can detect most problems which cause poor vision in young children. This photographic method of screening is able to pre-diagnose or diagnose seven problematic eye issues such as lazy eye, cross-eyes, astigmatism, cataracts and more. The screening procedures are simple and involve two pictures taken of each child's eyes. One picture is with the flash in the vertical position and one is in the horizontal position. The MTI PhotosScreener captures the eye's light reflection as the photograph is taken. These pictures are then sent to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to be analyzed. Parents are notified of the results in the event a referral to their eye doctor is suggested.
The Tennessee Lions work to brighten the future of Tennessee's children through this vision detection program. Each year the Lions Clubs screen over 25,000 children with necessary follow-up to be sure vision care is received. All at Roane County Schools wish to thank the Lions Club of Tellico Village for bringing this Outreach Program to our schools and allowing us to offer this opportunity to our families. We look forward to continuing and expanding the program for the 2008-9 school year.
